My Story

As a retired middle school science teacher, a mother of three adult daughters, and the eldest of four siblings, my passion for caregiving and understanding life’s transitions has been a lifelong journey. From an early age, I was captivated by nature, science, and the “why” behind everything. While in high school, I discovered a deep interest in funeral services, which led my father to introduce me to a local funeral home director. She encouraged my passion and offered guidance on pursuing a career in the field. However, my desire to explore beyond my rural hometown led me down the path of education instead.

For the past sixteen years, I have devoted myself to supporting family and friends through illness and end-of-life care. This calling became deeply personal in 2009 when my father passed away from a heart attack while in hospice care for prostate cancer. I had prepared for his passing intellectually, but the emotional impact was profound. I honored him by washing and dressing his body in preparation for the hospice nurse and funeral home—a deeply transformative experience that reignited my long-held passion for end-of-life care. The following year, I was present for my grandmother’s final moments and again performed this sacred act of care.

Since then, I have naturally stepped into the role of providing comfort, guidance, and hands-on support to loved ones during times of transition, all while balancing my own family and career. Now that I have retired, I am fully dedicating myself to this meaningful work as an End-of-Life Doula.

Inspired by the journey of my father’s acceptance of his passing, I often reflect on the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly—a process that requires deep introspection before emerging into something beautiful. His life and legacy continue to inspire me in my work.

I am currently furthering my expertise by pursuing a degree in Funeral Services at Bright Point Community College in Chester, Virginia. I look forward to providing compassionate support and guidance to individuals and families as they navigate life’s most profound transitions.
